News from Bannockburn School District 106
Every year the Board of Education for Bannockburn School District 106 votes to levy property taxes to fund the school budget. By law, we may increase that tax by the rise in CPI (consumer price index) and it is customary to do so to make sure our budget keeps pace with inflation. This year we voted not to increase taxes.
Over the next ten years, this will amount to $1.5 million dollars in tax savings to the residents of District 106.
We have closely monitored our ten-year financial plan and made fiscally sound decisions consistent with our long-range plan enabling us to make this decision. Assuming there is no change in the taxing structure for public schools, we feel confident that we will have adequate monetary resources to assure Bannockburn School continues to be an exceptional school.
Many community residents do not currently have children in the school and may be unaware of the extensive building improvements that have been made over the last few years. These include a Geothermal heating and cooling system, building additions of a new Science lab and Music room, and new lighting, flooring, lockers and cabinetry throughout the building. Colorful mosaics and murals, designed and constructed by the students, brighten the walls. The renovated courtyard now includes an organic garden and solar panels. We are the first school in Illinois to be Green Certified for our efforts.
I would like to give a special thanks to Board Member, Ann DuBois, who has headed the Building Committee for over ten years and has largely been responsible for the vision and planning of these improvements. Her impeccable taste and attention to detail have transformed the appearance of the school.
We welcome you to visit the school and keep updated on events at our website: bannockburnschool.org.
As always, I would also like to thank the community and the Village of Bannockburn for their ongoing support of the school.

6th, 7th and 8th Grade Service Learning
Mrs. Brosteau's math students are having fun playing math games while participating in an ongoing Service Learning Project through FreeRice.com
Mrs. Brosteau's students answer math questions on FreeRice.com and when answered correctly, earn grains of rice that in turn are converted into bowls of rice for the hungry, worldwide. Mrs. Brosteau advises students researched this site prior to participating and discovered FreeRice.com is a non-profit website run by the United Nations World Food Programme. This program is made possible by the generosity of the sponsors who advertise on this site and as more people play, the more advertising revenue is generated and in turn, converted in food donations. Mrs. Brosteau encourages everyone to participate, not only will you be helping to feed people worldwide, you too can have fun while helping.

New Safety Law for Drivers and Passengers
As of January 1st, 2012, Illinois became the 26th state to require all passengers in the back seat of a vehicle to wear seat belts. Formerly, only passengers under the age of 16 were required to do this. Now, police will be permitted to pull over a car if they see any person violating the law, potentially saving many lives.

CELL PHONE LAW
State law, Public Act 096-0131, prohibits the use of hand held cell phones while driving in school areas. Please refrain from using your hand held cell phone when driving onto school grounds. Thank you!
